Inspiration This Week

This has to be one of my most favourite native plants - the Golden Penda (Xanthostemon chrysanthus)

I discovered this beauty before it became a super popular nursery plant and the council started planting them as street trees (at least I think I did). It is a lowland rainforest tree of tropical north Queensland and I first found them flowering on the banks of a creek in the rainforest around Tully. Now I have a couple in my garden and one has started to flower already - so beautiful.

I was so entranced by the flower in my t shirt printing days I just had to do one. Here is the sample print I kept - now  20+ years old and a little faded and dated, but brings back lots of memories of life in NQ.

First Market

I'm going to be participating in Market Day next Saturday (28 May) which is held in conjunction with the Moreton Bay Region Art Awards and the week long Pine Rivers Festival. This will be my first ever market!
Market Day is being held from 10am to 4pm in the Strathpine Community Centre adjacent to the Pine Rivers Art Gallery. The Gallery and Centre are currently displaying the Art Awards entries and winners, and the Market will be right in the middle of all these beautiful works of art!  The Slab Hut Samford Art and Craft will have a stall there with lots of lovely handmade goodies including PalumaPrint. So we are hoping for lots of visitors.
There's more about the Festival on the council website

Something New

I've just tried my hand at making fabric baskets (or buckets or organizers). I actually made one ages ago and use it for storing zips - extremely useful. So after a bit of experimentation I tried a few sizes and came up with these using my Brisbane wattle screenprint!

They are now in my Etsy shop (but I am tempted to keep them myself!).

Imagine them filled with lots of goodies as a gift for a friend.

And my little Brisbane wattle (Acacia fimbriata) which used to look like this just last July, is now more than 2 metres tall and has flowers forming. Can't wait to photograph it - it is a beautiful little tree - every garden should have one.

My creative space aka printing studio has been transformed.

The old concrete laundry tubs which took up sooo much space have been removed, and a new modern one installed in the corner - out of the way, and I've hidden the washing machine and tub (and old broom cupboard) behind some curtains from Crazy Clarks. The printing table is covered by the blue cloth. I've even put up some nice pictures that have been languishing in a cupboard. And the winter sunshine pours in.

I've now got so much more space that I can have a little cane chair and table in the area - to have a cup of tea and relax between printing stints.

I've put a couple of my fabric prints in small photograph frames.

Now I wish I had taken a photo of the space right at the beginning, before I even moved in - with the old yellowish painted walls, peeling yellow lino that didn't make it to the walls and those tubs! Now its all blue and white.

And my creative space extends outside

No excuses now.....

Artist of the Month

Gulp - that's me - feature artist for May at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery shop. There's even a bit about me on the Gallery website. I have never considered myself an artist - design is more my forte and I think there's a big difference. But I am happy to pretend for a month!

Anyway, talking about designing here is my latest little creation. It took about three prototypes before I was happy with the dimensions and overall functionality as a useful purse, as well as the appearance. I tried a few commercial patterns but in the end I constructed up my own.

My studio is undergoing a makeover - can't wait until it is transformed from the old laundry to a sunny and much more spacious room. I finally got rid of the old concrete tubs which must have been there since the house was first built in the late 50s. Photos coming as soon as I am re-installed.
