An Old Favourite - In Green

I haven't printed my grass tree design for some time - not sure why as it makes a lovely tea towel and place mats. Perhaps because the stencil was at the bottom of the pile and I just overlooked it. This time I tried green (a mix of light blue, yellow and brown with a touch of scarlet) and it looks great on the cream, oatmeal and flax linens.

That will be the final print run of existing designs for a while as I have now built up my inventory to a respectable level - yay.... Just got to complete the sewing and finishing off and then I can concentrate on playing around with some new designs and new printing techniques.

Flower of the Week

My screen printing has taken a bit of a back seat so far this year as I make the most of the hot, humid and showery weather to get things planted in the garden, and watch them grow - inches and sometimes feet (okay centimetres) overnight. One of the successes so far is the native swamp hibiscus (Hibiscus diversifolius).

Planted from tube stock around last September it is now nearly 2 metres high and is already flowering. The numerous buds are produced on long stalks.

and the flower is an extraordinary colour combination - creamy yellow with purple/maroon centres. The photo doesn't really do it justice.

The plant hasn't got as far as producing seed pods yet - supposed to be hairy and pointed.

I feel a new design coming on - the leaves, flower and buds are a perfect shape for stencil printing (and probably the pods as well) - nice and big and blocky without too much fiddly detail.

Apparently the leaves, flowers and seed are edible - if you can get past the prickles.

Big Day Printing

First session for 2011 - how can it be February already? My stock is almost non existent and I have to spend some serious hours replenishing -  I want to do some new designs but that will have to wait. Here is half of today's efforts - place mats and tea towels - the bower of beauty print in white on oatmeal and unbleached linen. First time I have tried this and I think they look gorgeous.

Ran out of time and light to photograph the afternoon's production - Brisbane wattle in burnt orange this time.

Birthday Beach Bag

I have just finished a birthday present for my sister - a beach bag.

This is my first go at the Nicole Mallalieu Beach Bag pattern (although it is one of the first of her patterns that I bought). I used my umbrella tree screen print in turquoise on pale blue (an interesting colour combination but it works really well). There are three external pockets in the front, a zipper close and a turquoise "yo-yo" to finish it off .

This is what the back of the beach bag looks like.

And it is fully lined in turquoise with a zippered pocket and three compartment pockets. Loads of room for all her stuff.

Hope she likes it. It's taken me long enough to get around to making it!
